Frances Canyon Ruin

Today we went to find one of the pueblitos in the area.  We were finally able to drive the dirt roads, after 24 hours with no rain... We hadn't had that all weekend!

We saw one pueblito from the ground the other day when we found the petroglyphs, but the climb would have been pretty challenging.  Today's find was an interesting drive, as most of these places are, but a super easy walk.

The pueblitos were built mainly as defensive sites.  The Frances Canyon Ruin is one of the largest known and best preserved of the Navajo pueblitos.  Fireplace hoods and complete roofs are still in a couple of the rooms!

First peek at the ruins.
One of the rooms with an intact roof.
You can see the fireplace hood there in the corner of the room.
Checking out the view
This is inside the round tower.  The original ceiling is still intact in the whole room.
This was the drive down the Mesa.
It's a good thing we don't normally pass anyone else on these roads!

In celebration of Labor Day, we had an All-American meal for lunch.
This is the last of the Koegels we got in Michigan.  Now we'll have to suffer through just normal hot dogs again, till we get back to Michigan next year!

And for Labor Day dinner, some pork chops on the grill...
Baked beans...
And some cucumber/pepper/onion salad.
Hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend!!
