Checking out New Bern, NC

We went into New Bern today.  One of the first things I noticed was all of the painted bear statues around town.  These are a few of them.

I had to look up the significance of the bear.  New Bern was named by its founder, who was from Bern, Switzerland, and "Bern" means "bear".  New Bern calls itself Beartown.

We also discovered there was an antique boat show at the harbor, and went to check out the boats.  Lots of restored wooden boats.
Then we set out to see some of the sights around town.  There were several walking tours you could take, and we picked up info on all of them.  The one that interested me the most was the Nicholas Sparks tour.  Sparks used places in and around New Bern quite a bit in his books.

This Espiscopal Church is mentioned in "The Wedding".
This was the Pollack Street Deli, which is mentioned in "A Bend in the Road".
This building is where Pepsi Cola got its start.  This building is also mentioned in "A Bend in the Road".
Centenary Methodist Church is mentioned in "The Notebook".
We just thought this building was cool.  It's the post office.
Another cool building... The county courthouse.
This is the Presbyterian Church.
This is the Masonic Temple Theater, which is mentioned in "The Notebook".
I thought this was weird.  They had train tracks running right down the middle of one road.  Like, actual train tracks, not a trolley.
As we were walking back toward the truck, we saw this restaurant that had seating up on the roof.  We had to go check that out!  It's called Captain Ratty's Seafood and Steakhouse, and it's also a wine bar called The Grapes of Rat Wine Bar.  We sat up on the roof and had some chips and queso and drinks.
Fun day!  We finished off by doing a grocery store run, and filling the tank up on the truck, because we're taking off again in the morning.
