Outer Banks/Hatteras Island/Avon, NC

We only had about 90 miles to travel, as the crow flies, but it took us 190 miles to get there!
We did see that there is a ferry that goes right out to Hatteras, but in looking up the schedule, it didn't look like it ran in May, and we didn't know if it could carry RVs anyway, so we took the land route.  It was an interesting drive as we got close to the Outer Banks.  Several really long bridges to cross. At one point we had massive amounts of traffic coming towards us, and wondered what the deal was, and then we came upon a drawbridge, so all those cars must have been caught behind the raised bridge.

This is a cute little park, kind of right in the middle of the island, east-to-west, and will be an easy walk to get out to the beach.  Nothing fancy here, but nice, wide sites to back into.
The town we are in is called Avon, but was originally called Kinnakeet, and I guess that's what the locals still call it.
Just a few miles south of us is the Cape Hatteras lighthouse, and we plan on checking that out.  A few miles north is Rodanthe, and on the way down, I spotted the Inn at Rodanthe, from the movie Nights in Rodanthe, so we are going to have to go check that out!  At the top of this string of islands we are on is Kitty Hawk, which is definitely on our to-do list.

It's a little cool and rainy today, and supposed to be the same tomorrow, but the rest of the week we are here is supposed to be warm and sunshiny!

Things cleared off so we could go check out the beach!
No shells on the beach, but I did find these pieces that almost look like tumbled stone.  Very pretty and smooth.
