St Simons Island

Today we drove over to St Simons Island, about 15 minutes from our park.  We started out at the Golden Isles Welcome Center, where we picked up info for St Simons, as well as Jekyll Island, where we want to go tomorrow.
There were beautiful live oaks and Spanish moss everywhere!
A short walk from the welcome center was the lighthouse.
We walked over to Iguana's Seafood Restaurant for lunch, because the lady at the welcome center told us that dogs were welcome to sit on the patio with you while you eat.  Budger was pleased.  They even brought him a little bowl of water.
I had to try the St Simons punch.
Brad had a St Simons Bud Light.
We had a shrimp variety plate for an appetizer.  Bacon wrapped, coconut, fried, and hot sauce shrimp, all caught fresh in the St Simons water.
Brad had a shrimp salad sandwich.
I had a fried flounder sandwich.  Both were really yummy!
We decided to take a walk to see the Avenue of the Oaks.  It was about a 2-1/2 mile walk 'round trip, and well worth it!  Beautiful!  On the way, we passed this very pretty Presbyterian church.
The Avenue of the Oaks leads to the golf course.
Very pretty walk along the road leading up to the golf course.
The golf course was on both sides of the road.
This is where someone would have come out and kicked us out if we had tried to go any further... Very exclusive place!
Walking back up the road, we realized the really beautiful view was if we walked between the trees in the median of the road.
Next we drive out to Fort Frederica, which was built as protection at the mouth of the river.

I thought this was interesting, because I had seen houses with this type of façade, and thought it looked like rough stucco.  Interesting to find out it is made with oyster shells!
Up close look.
Wandering around the grounds, there were foundation ruins from the town that was built by the fort.  There were signs by each foundation to tell you what that building was, or who had lived there.
This is what is left of the actual fort.
Good view up the river!
A small cemetery from the town of Frederica is still there.
We also stopped at Christ Episcopal Church, which is just down the road from the fort.  It's a very small church, but the oldest church on the island.  The docent there told us there are 600 members, and they hold 3 services each Sunday.
Beautiful stained glass!
Jimmy Carter sat here!
Behind the church is a pretty cemetery.  Each family seemed to have a special sectioned off part.
We were ready to head home by then.  I really had wanted to go back up to the welcome center area, because low tide was mid-afternoon, and then you can walk on the beach, but we are still recovering from Disney jet-lag!

Tomorrow, Jekyll Island!
