Tybee Island

Today we drove out to Tybee Island... First stop had to be the lighthouse!

Awwwww.... There's where "we" began, five years ago!
We got married right up there, at the tippy top.
Right beside the lighthouse is Ft Screven.
A little history of Tybee Island.
After a picnic lunch, sitting on the beach swing where we took some wedding pics, we took a walk along the beach... Something we didn't do when we got married (we stayed at Hilton Head, and walked the beach there).
The blimp was flying off-shore!
Farther down the beach, we stopped in for a drink, and realized it was the same place we had stopped for lunch a couple of years ago.
I liked this sign that was hanging inside.
On our way back into Savannah, we stopped at Ft Pulaski, and were able to use our National Parks pass to get in.

Fort Pulaski National Monument is located on Cockspur Island between Savannah and Tybee Island, Georgia. It preserves Fort Pulaski, where in 1862 during the American Civil War, the Union Army successfully tested rifled cannon in combat, the success of which rendered brick fortifications obsolete. The fort was also used as a prisoner-of-war camp. The National Monument includes most of Cockspur Island (containing the fort) and all of adjacent McQueens Island. (Copied from Wikipedia).
Crossing the moat.
Looking out this direction, you can see the Tybee Island Lighthouse.
And also the Cockspur Island lighthouse, which actually sits out in the water.
At one time, the entire interior was ringed with beams like this, to provide a sheltered walkway.
The sides that were bombarded with Union shots have been left as is, some with cannonballs still embedded.
After visiting the fort, we were ready to head home.  We're saving another day to re-explore Savannah.
